FIDGET SPINNER - NOT ONLY A TOY

What is a Fidget Spinner?
It is basically a flywheel - a simple swivel that rotates around a fixed axis and uses inertia. In case of the Fidget Spinner, the swivel is the “body” of the spinner itself (also called case or housing), the axis is the centre of the ball bearing, meaning also our fingers. A classic Fidget Spinner has two or three arms with a ball bearing in the middle, but there are also other, often very extravagant shapes. Some put emphasis on the design, others are intended for fidgeting, i.e., tricks.

How to use a Fidget Spinner?

It is very simple - hold the middle of the swivel firmly between the thumb and the index finger and used the remaining fingers or the other hand to spin it.

What is Fidget Spinner used for?
Today it is mostly for fun. However, in the original patent from 1993, the Fidget Spinner was intended as a medical tool for children with autism and hyperactivity. It helps with concentration and improves fine motor skills; it can also be used for stress relief for anyone who doesn’t know what to do with their hands.

The most important part - the ball bearing
The quality of the ball bearing directly affects the rotation speed, time of spinning and noise level of the Spinner. So-called dry bearings (that do not require lubrication) made of plastic, steel, stainless steel, steel-ceramic or full-ceramic are used. Plastic bearings are very cheap, yet have relatively high friction and are worn down quickly, which is why they are rarely used in Spinners. On the other hand, full-ceramic bearings have a long service life and a very low friction coefficient; however, they are very, very expensive. The spinners we import have stainless steel bearings - an ideal middle ground. The performance of these bearings cannot compare with steel-ceramic or full-ceramic bearings, but they do not rust and have a long service life while being much cheaper.

Fidgeting - tricks with a Spinner
Spinner users grow bored of just spinning the wheel between your fingers real quick and often start to practice various tricks. You can find these tricks online, ranging from throwing a spinning Spinner from one hand to the other, from one finger to the next, up to complex, almost gymnastic creations. Most tricks use the gyroscopic effect of a spinning flywheel - the spinning axes tends to always face the same direction. This phenomenon has a broad application in industry and science - gyroscopes make rockets fly straight and guide planes to their destination (gyrocompass) and if the wheels of a velocipede are not spinning, the cyclist will fall.

This tool, or let’s say toy, will soothe and entertain you anywhere. It is small and does not require any special conditions - a playground or a hall, electricity or WiFi. You can spin your Fidget Spinner at home, outside, in a car, on the street, on a bus or anywhere you want.
